The Problem

Most NFPA 99 Training
Doesn't Prepare Techs to Actually Fix Anything.

Generic Code Courses

Three days in a classroom reading the NFPA 99 codebook. Your technician passes a test — then goes back to the floor and still doesn't know how to service the equipment in front of them.

Audit Risk Is Real

A Joint Commission or CMS survey finding on medical gas systems isn't just a paperwork problem. It can halt patient care, trigger corrective action plans, and put your facility's accreditation at risk.

One-and-Done Training

Most certification programs are a single event. Two years later your tech can't remember how to pull the o-ring out of the back of a check valve without a shutdown, and there's no instructor around to help.

The Lantern Difference

Certification Training Built
Around Your Facility's Exact Equipment.

Lantern Academy isn't a generic NFPA 99 course with your logo on it. We build a curriculum specific to the makes and models your technicians service every day — backed by a persistent on-demand Workflow Library that stays useful long after certification day.

Equipment-Specific Curriculum

We scope your facility's equipment before we build the course. Your technicians train on the exact regulators, manifolds, alarm panels, and outlets they service — not hypothetical units from a textbook.

Expert Human Instruction

Wes has been working in medical gas since 2006. Real field experience, real answers to real problems — and yes, the occasional dad joke to keep things from feeling like a compliance exercise.

3-Year Workflow Library Access

Every certified technician gets 3 years of access to Lantern's Workflow Library, including 60+ hands-on repair and maintenance videos. When something's acting up at 2 AM, or a tech can't remember where the o-ring goes during a repair, the answer is one search away — not buried in a binder from a class they took two years ago.

Course Curriculum

What's Inside
the Certification Program

A structured pathway from foundational compliance knowledge to hands-on certification — built specifically for hospital biomedical and facilities teams.

Pillar 1 NFPA 99 Foundations

Covers the regulatory landscape every medical gas technician needs to understand: NFPA 99 requirements, facility categories, system types, and what your obligations are as a service technician. Designed to be practical, not a code-reading exercise.

  • Medical gas system categories and classifications
  • Level 1, 2, and 3 system requirements
  • Technician roles and documentation obligations
  • Inspection, testing, and verification standards
Pillar 2 Your Equipment — Facility-Specific Training

This is where Lantern is fundamentally different. Your curriculum is customized to include detailed instruction on the specific manufacturers and models in your facility. No filler content for equipment you'll never see.

  • Equipment-specific operation principles
  • Manufacturer service documentation and specs
  • Common failure modes for your equipment
  • Parts identification and ordering context
Pillar 3 Repair & Maintenance — Hands-On Procedures

Step-by-step video instruction on how to actually service the equipment — not just how to describe it. From outlet rebuilds to alarm panel troubleshooting, every lesson is a practical how-to, not a lecture.

  • Preventive maintenance schedules and procedures
  • Outlet inspection, troubleshooting, rebuild, and retesting
  • Alarm panel diagnostics and response: high-risk alarms, pressure switches, and more
  • Manifold servicing: PM, daily walkthrough, cylinder changes, and leak testing
Pillar 4 Certification Exam & Documentation

Upon completing the coursework, technicians sit a competency exam. Pass, and they receive a digital and printed certificate — one copy for them, one copy automatically sent to their Facility Director for compliance records.

  • Competency-based certification exam
  • Digital certificate (immediate access)
  • Printed certificate for display
  • Facility Director compliance copy and audit trail
Pillar 5 Ongoing Workflow Library Access

Certification is the beginning, not the end. Every certified technician gets 3 years of access to the full Lantern Workflow Library — 60+ searchable repair and maintenance videos covering the exact equipment in your facility, available on any device, any time. It is built for real technician moments, like checking where the o-ring goes, confirming a disassembly step, or refreshing a service sequence before equipment goes back into service.

  • 60+ hands-on repair and maintenance videos
  • Searchable by equipment, manufacturer, and category
  • Useful when technicians need a field refresher on repair details
  • Available on desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • 3-year access included with certification
Is This Right for You?

Built for Facility Leaders
Who Need Real Results.

This is the right fit if…

  • You manage facilities staff at one or more hospitals
  • You need technicians certified to NFPA 99 requirements
  • You're preparing for a Joint Commission, CMS, or state health department survey
  • Your team services medical gas equipment but has never received formal equipment-specific training
  • You want ongoing reference access for your techs, not just a one-time class
  • You need compliance documentation your Facility Director can actually use at audit time
  • You're rolling out training across multiple facilities or a full health system

This isn't the right fit if…

  • You're looking for a generic online 6040 course with no facility customization
  • Your team doesn't service medical gas equipment (this isn't a general compliance course)
  • You only need a certificate for its own sake, with no interest in actual competency

Not sure if it's a fit? Send us a message — we'll tell you honestly.

Your Team Trains and Gets Certified

Technicians complete the program at their own pace, on any device, without missing shifts. When they pass, they're certified — and you have the compliance documentation to prove it. Facility Directors track progress in real time through the Director Portal.

Your Instructor

Wes Reed

Wes has been working in medical gas since 2006, in the field, not behind a desk. He's serviced the equipment your technicians service, navigated the audits your facility faces, and built Lantern Academy because he got tired of watching techs pass a code exam and still not know how to fix anything.

Every Lantern lesson is taught by Wes personally — no AI-generated content, no third-party narrators, no padding. Just field expertise in video form.

FAQ

Common Questions,
Answered Directly.

How is Lantern different from a standard 6040 class?

A 6040 class (or similar generic NFPA 99 program) covers medical gas regulations in general terms. Your technician learns what the code says, passes a test, and receives a certificate. They may leave without knowing how to service the specific equipment in your facility.

Lantern builds around your equipment. Before your team starts, we scope the specific makes and models they service. Every lesson covers what they'll actually encounter on the job — including hands-on video instruction on repair and maintenance procedures for those exact units.

What does "equipment-specific" customization actually involve?

When you sign up, we ask you to provide a list of the medical gas equipment your team services — manufacturers, model families, and any particular units you want prioritized. We then configure your facility's course to pull in the relevant lessons, videos, and reference materials for that specific equipment from our Workflow Library.

Technicians won't sit through lessons about equipment they'll never see. The curriculum is filtered to what's actually in your facility.

How long does the certification program take to complete?

The program is self-paced, so technicians can work around their shifts. Most complete it in 2–4 weeks when working through it in their available time. There's no deadline pressure — your team moves at whatever pace works for your facility's schedule.

The Director Portal lets you track each technician's progress and set optional cohort deadlines if you need your team certified by a specific date (for example, before an upcoming survey).

What compliance documentation do we get?

Each technician who passes the certification exam receives a digital certificate (immediate access) and a printed certificate suitable for display. Facility Directors automatically receive a copy of every certificate as it's earned.

The Director Portal maintains a full audit trail of course completion, certification dates, and technician progress — exactly what you need to respond to a surveyor asking about your medical gas technician qualifications.

What happens at the end of the 3-year access period?

When a technician's 3-year Workflow Library access expires, contact us to discuss renewal. We haven't built automated renewal into the platform yet — renewal pricing and process is handled manually so we can make sure your curriculum is updated for any new equipment your facility has added.

Can we roll this out across multiple facilities or a full health system?

Yes — multi-facility rollouts are one of the things Lantern handles especially well. Each facility gets its own equipment-specific curriculum, and each Facility Director gets their own portal view. System-level administrators can see across all facilities.

For 100+ seats across a health system, contact us for System Rollout pricing. We'll build a deployment plan with you and work with your team's onboarding schedule.

Is this actually NFPA 99 compliant? Will it hold up in a survey?

Yes. The Lantern curriculum is mapped to NFPA 99 requirements for medical gas system technician qualification. The certification covers the knowledge and competency requirements surveyors are looking for.

What if we're not satisfied with the training?

We offer a full refund if you're dissatisfied with the program for any reason. We'd rather you tell us what's wrong so we can fix it — but if the program isn't the right fit, we'll make it right.
